How to cleanse your crystals: 4 gentle methods, and the gesture that changes everything
To cleanse a stone, the simplest method is to run it under a stream of cold, non-stagnant water for five minutes, then dry it with a clean cloth. For stones that cannot tolerate water (selenite, malachite, turquoise, lapis lazuli), prefer smudging with sage or palo santo. A stone should be cleansed as soon as it feels "heavy" — or, by default, with each full moon.
Why cleanse a stone, really?
In the tradition of lithotherapy, stones are living. They absorb what surrounds them — moods, conversations, fatigue, joys. From being held in the palm of your hand, placed on a desk, or slipped into a pocket, they eventually become charged. Cleansing them allows them to become available again.
You can choose to embrace this energetic interpretation. You can also view cleansing as a symbolic act: the act of caring for the object is, in itself, a form of self-care. Both work. And at AURÆN, we don't ask you to choose a side — we ask you to be present in the moment you do it.
When to cleanse?
- Upon receiving a new stone (it has traveled, been handled, exposed).
- After a period of intense use (grief, exam, difficult project, moving).
- If another person has held it for a long time.
- By default, with each full moon (approximately every four weeks).
The 4 gentle cleansing methods
1. Clear water — the simplest
This is the most universal and accessible method. Hold the stone under a stream of cold, non-stagnant water (tap water, spring water, or — if you're lucky enough — a stream) for two to five minutes. While the water runs, focus on releasing what it has absorbed. Then dry it with a clean cloth. That's it. Simple as that.
⚠ Stones NOT to be placed under water:
- Selenite — water-soluble, it crumbles over time.
- Celestite — fragile, like selenite.
- Malachite — can release copper particles.
- Turquoise — its color dulls with moisture.
- Lapis lazuli — its surface degrades in the long term.
- Pyrite — can oxidize.
- Hematite — can rust.
For these stones, go directly to smudging or earth burial.
2. Smudging — the most versatile
This is the queen of methods. It suits all stones, without exception, and it is also the most beautiful to practice.
Light an incense stick (officinal sage, sustainably sourced palo santo, frankincense, benzoin, myrrh — choose what resonates with you) and pass the stone three times through the smoke, focusing on releasing what it has absorbed. Many practitioners add a phrase — "Thank you, I release you" — to complete the gesture.
3. Earth — the deepest
For highly charged stones — those that have accompanied grief, shock, or a difficult period — earth burial is the preferred method. Bury the stone in a pot of soil, or directly in a corner of the garden, for 24 to 72 hours. Retrieve it, brush it gently, rinse it with water if it tolerates it.
4. Dry salt — to be handled with caution
Place the stone on a saucer of coarse salt for an entire night. The salt absorbs the energies. In the morning, discard the salt outdoors (never down the sink).
⚠ Important precautions: Salt scratches certain stones (turquoise, calcite, opal, malachite, lapis lazuli). It degrades silver chains. If your stone is mounted in jewelry, place only the stone, never the chain.
Special cases — the questions we are asked most often
How to cleanse amethyst?
Amethyst tolerates all methods. Clear water for two minutes, smudging, earth, dry salt — your choice. Our favorite: clear water followed by a night on the window sill on full moon nights.
How to cleanse rose quartz?
Water is perfectly suitable for it. Simply avoid prolonged sun exposure (which dulls its soft pink color) — so prefer the moon to the sun for recharging.
How to cleanse obsidian?
Obsidian is a dense stone, born from volcanic fire. It cleanses very well with cold water. For stones that have accompanied a strong break, we suggest earth burial — that is its original method.
How to cleanse turquoise or lapis lazuli?
Never with water, never with salt. These two stones are fragile and sensitive to moisture and abrasives. Prefer smudging (sage or palo santo, three passes through the smoke).
How to cleanse a bracelet with stones mounted on elastic or cord?
- Elastic weakens with hot water and salt — prefer smudging.
- Silk or cotton cord tolerates brief cold water exposure.
- 925 sterling silver chains blacken on contact with salt and prolonged moisture.
How to cleanse a stone mounted in a ring?
If the stone is set on a silver or gold band, never soak the entire piece of jewelry. Either quickly pass the band under running water and dry immediately, or (better) simply smudge the entire piece of jewelry.
The AURÆN ritual — cleansing as a gesture, not a chore
Many people treat cleansing as a technical routine. At AURÆN, we suggest treating it as a short ritual — a few minutes a month — that marks the passage from one cycle to the next.
The full moon ritual
- The day before the full moon, gather all your stones on a shelf or tray.
- On the night of the full moon, place them on a windowsill facing the sky, or outdoors if you can. Each stone first passes (depending on what it tolerates) under a stream of water, or three times through the smoke of a palo santo stick.
- Let them spend the night under the moon. The moon takes care of recharging them.
- In the morning, retrieve them before the sun hits them directly.
This ritual, performed twelve times a year, becomes a seasonal marker.
For busy days
If you have five minutes, no more:
- Run under cold water for two minutes (or smudge with three passes).
- Dry with a clean cloth.
- A silent phrase: "Thank you. I release you."
- The stone returns to its place.
That's enough. The gesture matters more than the duration.
Cleansing, and then what?
Cleansing is about emptying. Recharging is about filling. The two actions go together, but they are not the same.
To recharge your stone once cleansed, you can:
- Place it on the windowsill on a full moon night (universal, gentle, risk-free method).
- Place it on a quartz cluster or an amethyst geode for a few hours.
- Leave it in the sun — only for stones that tolerate it: carnelian, tiger's eye, red jasper, hematite, heated citrine. Never for: amethyst, natural citrine, rose quartz, fluorite, kunzite.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I cleanse my stones?
On the full moon (every four weeks) is the traditional frequency. You can cleanse more often if the stone feels "heavy," or if it has just accompanied a difficult event.
Do all stones need to be cleansed?
Yes — except rock crystal and selenite, which are, according to tradition, self-cleansing. They can even be used to cleanse other stones.
How long should a stone be left to cleanse in water?
Two to five minutes is sufficient. Beyond that, you gain nothing more — and you can weaken certain stones.
Can I cleanse my stones with classic scented incense?
Theoretically yes, but we do not recommend it. Commercial scented incense often contains chemical binders. Prefer: officinal sage, palo santo, frankincense, myrrh, benzoin.
My stone bracelet has lost its color — is it still good?
A stone that dulls or cracks is, in many traditions, a stone that has finished its service. You can thank it and return it to nature. Then choose another one.
Do I have to believe in cleansing for it to work?
No. Cleansing works at least symbolically — like any ritual, it marks a transition and brings you back to your intention.
The properties mentioned in this article are based on esoteric and symbolic traditions. They are in no way a substitute for medical advice or treatment.
