The Judgment (Arcanum XX) — Tarot of Marseille: Meaning, Symbols, and Interpretation
An angel sounds a trumpet. Below, figures emerge from a tomb, arms raised. This is not a judgment of condemnation — it is a call. Something within you hears and responds.
Its meaning in two sentences
The Judgment is the arcanum of the inner call, of resurrection, of a long-awaited vocation. When it appears, it signifies a threshold crossed: you know what you have to do.
The image
An angel in the sky blows a trumpet from which a banner hangs. Below, three figures emerge from an open tomb. With arms raised, they welcome the call.
Main symbols
- The trumpet. The undeniable call.
- The waking figures. What was dormant in you and is now stirring.
- The open tomb. The end of a long inner slumber.
- The angel. The higher voice — or the clearest part of oneself.
Meaning in a reading
Positive position: call heard, vocation embraced, renewal, return to life after a long season of slumber. A just decision finally made.
Delicate position: call ignored, refusal of change, excessive judgment of self or others. The tomb remaining closed out of habit.
Practical question: you already know. Answer. What you would put off until later won't be better in 6 months.
Emotional question: a relational cycle closes and another opens. A deep reconciliation, or a clear end to a relationship.
Ritual advice when it appears
Answer a concrete call this week. An unanswered email, a message from a loved one, an intuition you pushed away. The Judgment teaches that many of our blockages stem from unanswered calls.
Allied stone: carnelian (vital impulse to respond) or rock crystal (clarity of the call).
Precautions
Tarot is a tool for introspection. The Judgment speaks of an inner call, not a magical sign. If someone pushes you to "answer a call" by demanding heavy commitments (financial, spiritual, exclusive), it is suspicious. Your call remains yours.
