The World (Arcanum XXI) — Tarot of Marseille: meaning, symbols, and interpretation
The World closes the Major Arcana series. In the center, a figure dances within an oval wreath. At the four corners, the four living creatures: the eagle, the lion, the man, the bull. All is there.
Its meaning in two sentences
The World is the arcana of accomplishment, of rediscovered wholeness, of a completed journey. When it appears, it signifies complete success—and the threshold of a new beginning.
The image
An androgynous figure dances in the center of an oval plant wreath. In each hand, a scepter or symbolic object. At the four corners of the card, an angel (winged man), an eagle, a lion, and a bull. Bright colors, an atmosphere of apotheosis.
Main symbols
- The dancer in the center. The accomplished soul, in free movement.
- The oval wreath. Rediscovered unity, the personal mandala.
- The four living creatures. The four elements, the four temperaments, the integration of opposites.
- The central position. The subject is no longer dispersed — it is centered.
Meaning in a reading
Positive position: accomplishment, completed project, finished inner journey, full recognition. The last step of a great cycle.
Delicate position: refusal to conclude, satisfaction becoming stagnation, attachment to success. The "I've made it" that becomes a fixed prayer.
Practical question: you are reaching your goal. Celebrate, and prepare yourself: a new cycle is opening behind this one.
**Emotional question**: a complete, accomplished relationship that integrates all dimensions. Or the celebration of a rediscovered singleness in its fullness.
Ritual advice when it appears
Celebrate something. This week. A success, even a small one, even an old one. Light a candle, share a meal, write in a notebook what has been accomplished. The World asks us to honor what has been achieved — otherwise, the next cycle cannot truly open.
Allied stone: citrine (joy of accomplishment) or rock crystal (clarity of the whole).
Precautions
Tarot is a tool for introspection. The World marks a summit — but no summit lasts forever. Enjoy, without mistaking the apotheosis for the end of all effort. After the World comes the Fool — and the wheel turns.
